Top 4 trading tips for new traders

How can I avoid common trading mistakes?

Like any other skill, online trading takes practice to master. Many new traders start out with little practical market knowledge which can lead to poor decision making. Before you get started it is very valuable to get a basic understanding of charts for the market you’d like to trade, you should also learn more about new trading methods and strategies. Remember, to become a successful trader, preparation is key.

You can study charts for all of the 4,000 markets we offer in the LCG Trader Demo platform and can review trends, volatility, range and trading fluctuations to get a better feel for the markets you’re interested in.

While you will be able to build up to making large profits, when you first start out be realistically about how much you trade and the potential returns you’ll enjoy. The more familiar you become with the markets, the more you’ll earn, learn as much as possible by using our advanced Demo Platform before upgrading to a Live Account.

How to decide which charting type is best for you?

The chart type that you choose to use is often a personal choice and depends largely on how you would like market data to be displayed in order to make the best possible trading decisions. The most popular charting types are line, bar and candlestick charts.

You can switch between charting types in LCG trader by right clicking anywhere on the screen and selecting “Chart Type”.  Viewing options include zoom, range, colour and more. You’ll also be able to turn on functionality like open position indicators, bid price line, grids, tick volume and period separators.

Devising a trading plan and managing risk

One of the most important aspects for new traders is understanding risk management and developing a sound trading plan. Creating a trading plan can help you determine how much risk you feel comfortable with while making your investment objectives clearer. A trading plan will also allow you to accurately record entry and exit price and so track your trading performance more precisely.

When devising your trading plan keep these points in mind: what is your motivation for trading? How much capital do you realistically have to invest? Have you considered setting up a stop loss? How much time do you have available for trading and finally, what are your expected returns?

    What is fundamental analysis?

Fundamental macro analysis and the key indicators help traders make better decisions, as well as devise clearer, more successful trading plans. Our analysts at LCG are some of the best in the industry and provide regular market analysis, reports and news which could help you build a better picture of events within the financial markets.

As you learn more about online trading it is important that you understand how best to benefit from fundamental analysis, including gaining a better understanding of factors like the labour market, economic growth, trade, housing data and retail sales and how these affect various markets.
